THE UNIT IS DENARIUS, PLURAL DENARII

i think ABs answer is better. Denarii.
if the clue read,
Old coins in (A) dire condition, it would be an anagram.

Many thanks to all - I just looked it up to see that it denarii is the plural for roman silver coins. Its good to know that these crosswords are educational as well as being enough to drive you to the brink of madness!!
