Once again, two clues are bugging me...

"Set off explosive; lifted pin out first" = ignite.

"Clean up tabletop and emerge quickly" = erupt.

Many thanks.

erupt=
clean - pure (up = backwards) = erup
tabletop = t (inital letter)

erupt = emerge quickly

Thanks both. Aye, Trevor - both were Down. Wouldn't the logic still apply if they were Across though? Or is this some kind of crossword formality whereby 'backwards' words only appear in Down clues???

Backwards words, in Down clues will tend to use "up" or "lifted" (lots of other stuff, too).

I don't see either working as an across clue.

("clean" UP = "pure/erup" backwards, only works because up is the opposite of down).

Clean backwards tabletop and emerge quickly.
would work.
Although the word "backwards" would probably be hinted at,(flipped, from the east)
---------------------------------------------
Set off. Ignite

explosive, (gel)ignite

pin/leg, out first (deleted),

the clue hinges on the word "leg" being uplifted.

do i babble.
