I have a 'D' as 23d.'s first word is 'odd' I believe.
I thought 24ac, was GROINED but this contradicts it.

I can't see your problem. 24 ac is groined, and the first letter of 23d is o, second d - so?

Thanks for reply, AJT. I think I may have got their Xword errors wrong. So the only way it all fits is if 24ac. starts as printed, but ends with the D od ODD. Is that right? I thought it started (new version) one square further, ie as the final letter of 15 down.

24a starts in the left hand column (i.e. the 8th letter of 1d)

Hallgreening - I imagine you must have the crossword as printed in the newspaper - I have the downloaded version, and there is no problem there. It's quite clearly 7 letters from the g in 1d.
