Both 16 ac and 24 ac allegedly consist of 7 letters yet there are 8 spaces.

6th letter of 24a is 2nd letter of 23d

I battled with 16 Across for ages - if only I'd realised sooner that it started one letter/square along (as someone's said, at the fifth letter of 5 Down)
