Just wanted to share my euphoria with those of youwho do not find cryptic crosswords easy. Today has been one of those rare occasions whe I have finished sat. cryptic without any help - and please don't tell me araucaria was not up to his usual standard.

If you change the i to a you get a "rubber"

Lavender, Ulysses et al. Re 'Sandpiper', I was thinking more of a Mrs Bouquet character pronouncing it rather than any regional stereotype, so I think no denigration intended by A.
