encountered = met
me coming up first(i guess this is a down clue, so 'me' backwards, before met).

Worker is a clumsy synonym for a type of Ant.
Emmet is an old word for an Ant.

Thanks again Trevor. I did get the met backwards and me etc. I did not know that Emmet meant ant. Hence my recourse to the dictionary.
