Could it be mostly HOOD (bonnet) and RED ?
Was little red riding hood a nanny ?

It's a weak clue if it is, but I can't think past what you've said. That would make this clue begin with a D-the setter must have been high when he did this corner of the Xword.
D---L- (6) With exaggeration; roughly enough.
I can only think of DOUBLE, but again ,I can't see why...

If it helps, enough could be ample roughly possibly anagram indicator and amplify means to exaggerate. Haven't come up with an answer yet though...
