Finished crossword eventually, but what are the two 12-letter words we must highlight?

I'm in the same situation as you, Kreeves. However, I cannot see what the theme is for the words that had to be removed from the clues. Some of them go together like bull ring and black rat but others don't!

I believe the theme is snakes and the 2 words to be highlighted both begin with A
and are in Chambers & Bradford.

I have the theme and one of the words that starts in 1 across - any hints about the other one please?

Look for a mirror image. Together they form a double helix.
