Hi TJ
I'm 99.9% sure of the three letters I've obtained. Reluctant to publish the clues & answers as the crossie is current and I don't wish to spoil it for others. Thanks.

Hi, Jolan and TJ,

Not quite sure where I am going with this, but son could be issue. On the other hand, chaise, is French or something for chair. Take away the ch (don't know why), leaves you with aise add left L and you have aisle.
Is this too convoluted?

Can nobody see my answer?

Aisle does not mean empty or empty chair!

By golly Dot, that's a super explanation and makes me begin to suspect a boo-boo by Sage.

My S comes from the last letter of the following clue:-

Passes English, with mistakes (7) E + LAPSES

It would not be easy to change this into lapseD. Passed (yes) but 'lapsed' would be difficult to derive from 'mistakes'.
