Stuck on one clue 13 down "two saints cover up crack in some earth (8)" I have -p-d-f-l. Spadeful is "some earth". Is this the answer? If so, why?

Yes, I got SPADEFUL, too, and got as far as S = one saint, PAUL = another one, but couldn't work out DEF bit. Be interested to see what others think!

'def' is slang for 'excellent' and 'crack' can mean 'excellent' also (e.g. he was a crack shot).

thanks guys. Most of the answers came to me quite quickly tonight, but there's always at least one rather obscure one
