greedy kite,
the clues are always pretty necessary. There are loads of very clever (and experienced) people who won't have everything in front of them.

why do you assume that everyone has the Sunday Times?
It's more fun if we can see the clues.
how do people get to learn?

trevor and tonyw, I was about to suggest that clues be given. I did do the crossword, and remember the 2 answers I gave, but have recycled the paper now, so can't check anyway. Greedy hawk, you will find that if you give clues you have a much wider group of people willing to help, purely for the enjoyment of solving.
