Only word I can think of is reamer but don't know what it is.

Reamer is what I arrived at.
The longer solution being Creamer, losing the C for 17 across. Creamer indicating a substitutute for milk.
I'm not sure of the clubs bit though, perhaps some of the clever people can enlighten us.

I think the "clubs" bit (= 'c') may stand for the clubs of spades/hearts/diamonds/clubs suits in cards.
