Thanks trevor and FRANCIS I have looked every where for this always thought it was Nancy Astor

oops, i agree Megan, i thought it was Nancy too. i just automatically replied Astor when i saw 1st woman mp.

I just don't get this at all - Mary Astor was an American actress so can't see how she could be 1st British MP.

are these cryptic?
if so then it is a double definition (and a crap clue).

Not Mary Astor, Lady Astor.

They are not Cryptic. The actual clue reads " Mary --- , the first British woman MP (5) " .
The letters I have are correct with the other clues so just don't know what is required.

The only other thing I can think of is that Nancy Astor had a middle name.
