Conical Basket (7)--V----

Pl. help me with the above non-cryptic clue.

Are you sure that it is a v?

After an hour of deliberating I was just about to ask the same question !

I've got a couple of quite good reference books and can't find anything to fit.

Don't know if this might be relevant, but in catering, a conical strainer is called a chinois. If the v was wrong, this would fit. I don't know if this is the word for a conical basket, though.

The cutting letter V came from the down clue

A solid exposed surface of the earth (4)

for which I gave the answer LAVA, as the first letter was L. If LAVA is wrong, then V also will be wrong. Pl. help

how about LAND instead of LAVA?
