From a Times Cryptic crossword selection book:

Poor foreshore road under repair (4-2)

I've got the answer - hard-up - but not sure why. Presumably "road under repair" is "rd up" but why would "foreshore" be "ha"?

Any ideas?

not sure but i think foreshore road = hard (the hard). i guess up = under repair.

Chambers gives a definition of hard as a firm beach or foreshore.

Thanks JohnB and Chald - I thought I'd looked up "hard", but obviously I didn't as it's right there in my dictionary: "a sloping roadway across a foreshore".
