Yoohoo, ixion, peterm et al! I finished this yesterday but still don't quite get the word play in three of the clues.
31A: Component of visual purple you'll need because of following other people's (5)
because of=IN?
35A: Scotsman's drunk an aperitif (not the last) in e.g. Paris (10)
I have APER and NO in CITY but don't see where NO comes from.
27D: Learner works without a desk-top support (5)
The answer's obvious, but what's the word for learner that works without an A?

I assume "an aperitif (not the last)" =
a Perno(d)

Thanks. Those are the answers I have. I was taking the end off of aperitif and thus didn't see where the no was coming from. I still don't get the loper clue.

Hello Aristo. It's L + OPER[A].

Aaaah. I was wondering about opera but didn't know that L normally stood for learner. Is that a designation on British driver's licenses or something? Thanks, peterm!

Learner drivers in the UK have to display an 'L' plate (a red L on a white background) on their car until they pass their test. In crosswords 'L' can also be signified by student, pupil etc.
