Ta to AB, but I think 'apostles' is the correct answer. Thanks to filmfan-I don't know how I could have missed that-I've finished the rest of the puzzle, and I spent 35 minutes trying to get the answer to 26 across, but couldn't.

Actually the answer to 19D is SYRLYE = RLY (railway) in SYE (strain)
