As is my norm on Saturdays I like to do the Jumbo cryptic first as it normally will fill my day. Today I kind of whizzed through it leaving only 48dn Give up pro game(5)
I struggled to believe that the answer would be FORGO as surely it has an E in there. I then went to Chambers and, hey ho, there it was and years of teaching and belief were out of the window. Somewhat deflated and in doubt of any semblance of intelligence I turned to the normal crossword and read the clue to 8 down!

I think that forego means to precede,go before and forgo means to give up,i.e. two different words

Banana,do you have any letters because there are probably quite a few 8 letter words that fit?
Exacting was the first one that came to me.
