Can anyone help me with 5. down from the cryptic crossword in Saturday's Scotsman? The clue reads "Lengths first-class pupil went to in this restricted type of estate (3, 4)". The pattern I have is F?E ?A?L. Any help would be much appreciated.

Fee tail

looks more like FIN TAIL. (type of estate car)

At common law, fee tail or entail is an estate of inheritance in real property which cannot be sold, devised by will, or otherwise alienated by the owner
