3d. ? Looks like STEER (change of direction) ?

50d PRIOR (Matthew Prior, poet; 'prior' does not mean following/succeeding)

54a EVERY WHIT ( = every bit/whole; 'very white' with the last letter 'e' moved to the start).

I think 3d is more likely to be SHEER, meaning unmixed with anything else as an adjective, and to veer off course as a verb.

ugh.. i'm now stuck between "sheer" and "steer".... as far as i can see, they are both valid... not that ill be sending it in, but i like to have it all filled in just the same...
