Number of students must be sorted out from mid-August, I argue (9,6)

Have:
G???E?M?S ?G?T?R

Possibly Latin phrase from anagram of mid-August et cetera.

Suggestions, please.

Thanks for your suggestion.

GAUDEAMUS IGITUR is the name of a student song (= "number") in Scotland and is an anagram of MID AUGUST I ARGUE

Many thanks.

Am wiser now. But feel the compiler is drawing on arcane knowledge.

It's only arcane if you don't know it. This is schoolboy stuff. The compiler is supposed to puzzle you anyway!

Rather depends on what school one attended before condemning ones lack of erudition, or did I miss the irony in your reply?

Not so difficult, Enigma. It was clearly indicated as an anagram - sorted; there are sites which will sort out anagrams for you, if you need, and the phrase is in Chambers.
