Completed but glad I didn't start with 1 across..
1ac Crime when cherry, say, is chopped by a boy (7)
I mistakenly filled in crimson - knocking the "e" off crime and adding son - a cherry colour.
1 down Being brassy sort, loose woman removes top (7)
I filled in "crumpet" which fitted with 1 across. Having corrected 1 down to "trumpet" I'm left with T_E_S_N for 1 across Treason? If so I'd love and explanation. Musn't get my strumpets mixed up with crumpet in future.

I've just seen it - it's a homophone ! sorry to bother you!

TRE(E) A SON

HI, J/A. I think we are talking about a cherry tree. Chopped off, the last e would leave tre then a son. Tre a son Treason.

Got it Youtube Pipesmoker - the Cecilia Bartoli version - talking of crumpet!

She has a wonderfully controlled voice. Very skilled. I also have Hayley Westenra and Katherine Jenkins singing it. Both most pleasant on the ear.

Surprisingly, Laudate Dominum was only about 102 in the Classic FM Hall of Fame. Can't see why Vaughan Williams' Lark Ascending can be preferred by so many. For me, it is a cue to switch off the radio for eleven minutes.
