I have an answer to 26 across "Signalling when bishop ousts rook in calculation" (9). It is "beckoning", but I don't understand why, can anybody explain, please?

The calculation means reckoning, and the initial r has been replaced with the b which is short for bishop. Beckoning means signalling in this instance.

Sorry, I should also have said that the r is short for rook, on a chess board. Hence b replaces r and bishop replaces rook.

Thanks Pipesmoker, the answer now makes sense and my crossword is complete. As you will gather, I'm not a chess player!

Pipesmoker,

I know I wasn't the one who asked about the clue, but thank you for explaining the answer so well.

Hi, Lindsey, Glad you found it helpful. It is amazing what you can pick up over fifty odd years of crossword doing. Some people misspent their youth in snooker halls, I misspent mine hiding behind filing cabinets with a crossword in hand.

Thanks for your kind comments.
