Hi flummoxed I put CLUB in ie football team and card suit but I have only started the crossword so perhaps I am wrong

Norm, your club sounds good but I googled Alexander's successors and got an 'a' as 3rd letter in 7d and last letter of 9a - fits with other clues too.

A plea is a lawsuit (Chambers) and 'ple' and 'a' are the hearts ie middles of the words comPLEted and sAy
