Thanks Rosie. I had this as a possibility: mailed is spotted in my Chambers, but I have no entry for maile.

Naile is in the 11th edition of Chambers which is the one we're supposed to use

MH - I have found a couple of answers on this puzzle that are not in Chambers. It's either the answer or the clue that is particularly obtuse.

I agree AJT.

Obscure & Paul McKenna seem to go together.
I don't want to open up an old argument but the clues and answers to 6a , 15a, 25a,& 2d
are abstruse even for an advanced level crossword.

Hi Tony - As you say - the old argument. 13ac and 16d are not in Chambers. Both unknown to me. I found them by googling, but still can't see the wordplay.

I have finally admitted defeat but, much to my amazement, there is only 1 letter missing (1st letter of 24d). The wordplay leaves me totally nonplussed and a Welsh speaker the last word I expected to see in a Mephisto crossword was HWYL with an S to turn it into a plural!
Please someone put me out of my misery with 24 down.
