From an old Times prize crossword.

Pick up table to shift(5).

A - - - -

Is this something to do with ALTAR or ALTER? I can't quite get the clue.

Attack in match (3).

- - T

Is this HIT?

On which crude pig eats dirt finally getting in a state (3,6).

O - L / - A - - - -.

Is this OIL TANKER? I don't quite see the workings.

I think I realise now I've been duped into answering this question as the person asking obviously knows the answer and just expected spurious answers, but ho hum I'm merry anyway.

I don't think so Blue Moon. Sammy has dug up old Times crosswords several times before. These are a bit tricky to explain, I think.

Thank you, both. Oinker! Well, I never. Louisiana = LA.

Here's another, using the K from OIL TANKER:

Part of a charger alien inserted into sheep (7).

- - - - O - K

Again I don't get the workings but could this be the name of a breed of sheep, something like SUFFOLK or NORFOLK or MATLOCK?

Or is it something different entirely?

Thank you terry. That would give me a word beginning with F for the sheep clue.

blue moon, I assure you I don't know the answers; I wish I did. I can't wait to get this crossword finished and I hope to get it done before I go to bed tonight as I am sick of looking at it and not seeing the answers or not understanding them!
As terry has noticed, I always do old Times crosswords and when I get stuck or fed up with one, I come on here for help. Then I can get shot of it and on to the next one!
