Sorry ! New to this site. It was Sunday Times's Cryptic 4428.
12A Metal peg attached to small tree (5)
P?N?N turned out to be PINON, which I'd not heard of. If one can't drink it or eat it, I tend not to know things...

Well, you can eat it. pinon is a type of pine tree AND a sort of edible pine nut.
