For 1a, "spies" is the definition, not "old clubs".

I found this a tough one and there is still some wordplay I don't get. For 4d, I understand how "wolves" and "modest" come into it but not the rest. (The apostrophe in wolves' is misleading too). Then I think 19d is Austen but how does the N come into it? 13a I think is Enthuse but how does the E come into it?
