Just thought - these are the clues:

8d. Upstanding European man, a brick (5)

50a. Party minister backing argument (6)

A bit unsure but 8d could be Adobe (a dried mud brick)

"European man, a" = "E bod A" backwards (upstanding - as it is a down clue).

"bod" short for body/person/man might be pushing it a bit.

Thanks for 8d Trevor! I forgot to put the letter I have in for the 50a clue.

They are - E - B - L

At first I thought the answer was member, but the last letter is definitely L, and the words I can think of that will fit don't make any sense as far as I can see to the clue.
