Hiya bigd,

Only thing I can muster with this is maybe
LOGLINE.
A captain would enter lines into a Log
And a Logline is a a piece of line tied to a log in shipping to drag along to determine the speed of the vessel.
And the word paid is a nautical word meaning to run out a line or rope.
What do you think?

Thought of Logline, which also has the meaning in media of s short summary of a story, which could be said to "pay off" at the end, but think it's a little thin.

Ok, what do you think of this.

(Fly) = To use a fly in fishing is to Angle
So Fly could be Angle.
(Starting) to = T
Then put the T (UP) to the front to make Tangle
Interweave = Tangle

nice try Les but no coconut I think.

fishing is angling, (to) angle is (to)fish. Fly fishing is just one of several types of fishing. I don't think you can say fly = angle. It may simply be that we haven't been given the whole clue.

I'll admit it's a tad tenuous, but thats all we have to work with, unless bigd has missed a bit out.
Anyway, I tried Fly fishing once, and got into a right Tangle.
