I am working my way through my old book of Guardian crosswords. I correctly solved the following clue only because I had O_S_T_ and figured the answer was a Yorkshire town, but need to know why this answer is correct. Clue: Very big paving combine in Yorkshare. Solution: Ossett

In clothing sizes very big is OS, a sett is a stone or cobble.

Excellent! Thanks for the quick reply. Checking in my trusty Chambers dictionary I see now that one definition of "sett" is "a paving-block of stone or wood" and I guess I should have known OS already.
