2 are driving me crazy!
17 a Intelligent prompt (5) r---y
18 d State, an Australian one artist sent up (7)
I wonder if this is Arizona but why? Also it cuts across 17 a which would put an a in the middle i.e r-a-y so presumably that would be ready but why. Can anyone help. Thanks

(an = an, Australian = oz, one = i, ra = artitst),all done backwards (sent up, backwards = up)

I think Ready can be synonymous with both intelligent and prompt(quick).
a quick mind; a ready wit, that sort of thing.
Not a great clue (unless there is a better explanation than mine)
