Firstly, thanks to all for past assistance.

"UK and America in recession, about to solve puzzle" = 'sudoku'. It's the middle 'do' I can't work out...

And the clues I just can't get -
"Fifty percent kept in class (4)" = 'T-P-'
"In Greece, I return sequence of nine letters (4)" = '-O-A'

Many thanks

I think "to solve" = do, in this case.

"Fif(TY PE)rcent kept in class.

In Greece .. IOTA = the Greek equivalent of letter 'i' (A to I is nine letters, reversed).

Hi Pooksahib,

SUDOKU backwards is UK[OD]US. OD is overdrawn!

Best wishes,

All resect to Caravaggio,

I think the wordplay is,

"UK and America in recession" = SUKU,
"about" = written around,
"to solve" = Do (ie. Do a crossword)
puzzle = sudoku

Hi Trevor,

I appreciate your polite response and, on reflection, I think that, yes, you are right.

Kind regards,

Caravaggio
