Please can someone explain this:

The word given was "FELL" and the winning cryptic clue "Ruthless iron will".

I can see the Iron/FE connection of course, but do not understand how the rest works.

Help!

just iron will= fe'll like he'll for he will.
fell=ruthless

'll is an abbreviation for will

Well, there you go, you learn something everyday - I never knew that 'fell' could mean 'ruthless', or that 'll was also an abbreviation for 'will'.

Fat chance of ME ever compiling my own crossword!

I've just read that now that I've posted it - typical!! Of course I knew that 'll was an abbreviation for will.

I'm going to lie down in a darkened room now..........
