I think the answewr is NEAT, though quite why escapes me (white win don't help!). It is an old word for oxen and cattle.

Hi KenA, can you explain how, "from" = "A" for me please?
Is it a foreign term, used in names?

Hi Trevor

The \"a\" comes from Latin and is a preposition meaning from.

Hi Trevor,

The Joker is correct. The example given in Chambers is Thomas a Kempis (Thomas from Kempen).

Thanks to you both,
I did think of Thomas a Beckett.(then I thought his middle name might be alan).
I was on the right track(ish) then, with it being Somebody A Someplace?
