Thanks, Bullfrog - I never thought of Titus Groan! I was trying to get "inn" into it but couldn't get the "Spiv" clue incorporating an "I" at the end.

Thanks again, Bullfrog! "Peccavi" was very cleverly hidden! If you did the whole xword, I thought the clue for 6 down "It prevents rocky ground etc." was brilliant.

Paul, do you know the story about Sir Charles Napier who was sent to India to put down a rebellion in the Sindh Province, but exceeded his orders and conquered the area. He sent a telegram back to London with the one word 'Peccavi', -- I have sinned.

I've heard of Sir Charles Napier but never realised he had said "Peccavi"! From the Latin "peccare", I would imagine. Appreciate hearing from you.

In letters page of the Times this week, a descendant of Napier denied that this was true.
