12 down has me fooled. I know it's N?L? which gives several possible answers but none of them seem to fit the clue. Any ideas?

must be Nile (as in river Nile)?
Give the clue for those without the crossword please.

The clue is "A flower here would be old-womanish". I don't see the link with Nile - there are several other possibiliuties that fit N?L?
