Ok, I give up, what's the answer?

Sea covering exclamation by German politician M-A-H-R

I guess the German exclamation is something like 'ach', and the sea is 'mer' or something, but I can't put them together and get a politician. I have stuff to do so I give in!!

By the way, hasn't the guardian prize been good today? D and I both really made me smile. Plus I'm studying L, so that was nice too.

putting together what you've got - Meacher.

michael Meacher is/was a labour politician.

Ach is one of those Scottish words, like dreich or scunner. When asked to put a crossword down, and go and do something, the likely reply will be 'Ach, can ye no' dae it yersel'?'

It could indeed be Meacher, thanks. I looked Meacher up on google earlier, but I must've mistyped, cos I didn't get any politicians out of my search. I just tried it now and did, so I definitely typed it wrong the first time. Very annoying!!

Meer is the German for sea. Ach is also a German exclamation. Put one in the other, and you get Meacher.
