Lumbering clues from "Boatman" but I'm nearly done. Would appreciate help with:

1 "Sign of distress in Spooner's dull head" (4, 4)

The letters I think I have are ?E?? ?R?P

2 "It protects our heritage from worsening odds. Boatman supports it" (4)

The letters I think I have are ?P?B so if those are right I wonder if it's an abbreviation.

It is an acronym, SPAB.

1 is tear drop.
