Am having a problem with 16d. Food makes sailor
complain (4,4) ?A?T ?E?F (I think these are correct
but not 100% sure)the second word is probably BEEF.Any help will be gratefully
received.

Salt Beef (salt, old salt are words that can mean sailor)

I thought that clue was a bit easy for the Jerry that posts here.

Sometimes my mind tricks me into thinking that the last few answers must be hardest (or I would've got 'em by now) and I overlook the bleedin' obvious.
