Also knowing of your lack of matters military SS is abbrev.of staff sergeant. Again cant reconcile ASSAM.

Yes Both Staff Sargeant and Sargeant Major are not commissioned. First commissioned rank is 2nd Lieutenant. All this on the strength of National Service many years ago.

That's probably right Trevor; or possibly SA stands for Société anonyme - a business entity.
