Going back to Daily mail 1395(Tues 22nd) clue: unknown artist jailed by explosive autocrat. got answer tyrant...but where does the Y come from? Please put us out of misery!

"Unknown" in a crossword usually refers to one of the algebraic unknowns x, y or z - Y in this case.

artist = ra
unknown = y (as in maths, x, y axis on graphs).
