9d Imbrices

The theme centres around the novel (6 words) by 6d. Leave the second word out and enter the other 5 in the grid.

Three types of 11d can be entered normally, one author (1d) and three other 'types' of 11d.

16d Gangster embracing girl, half-cut, getting familiar ?EM?N (perhaps "em" is half-cut emma? but I don't see the gangster or familiar bit)

Quite a challenge today! Is there any significance to the extra letters in "the 4 answers which partially confirm the title"? I filled them in so as to make real words - hope that's correct!
