Think of a type of window (or glass) that has divisions. Chambers shows the old French word you want.

Thanks for suggesting Montant.

How does it fit the clue, especially the Hindu syllable bit?

I still haven't found the French word mentioned.

A MONTANT is a French word for a bar in a window. ONE and MANTRA,which is a Hindu syllable,if they are 'wanting',i.e. lacking final letters, together spell MONTANT. Is 20 across CABARET,by the way?
