Tidy old finance chancellor, in short - get shot!(5)DE?CE. I can't work out any wordplay for 'deuce' or 'de-ice'. Please help

DOUCE is a Scottish word for "tidy" - I finally found it!

In that case I am well & truly flummoxed. I was sure that the only letter in doubt was the 3rd and the only letters that would fit were L and U.

The word is in Chambers - I wouldn't have known it otherwise. See my earlier posting for construction.

Not convinced. If however you tidy,i.e. rearrange OLD and CE,the short form of Chancellor of the Exchequer you get DOLCE,which is the same as DOUCE according to Chambers, Still can't see why it's get shot but half these clues have long struck me as being bizarre in the extreme.
