Thanks, Neil. The Barabas I know of was about a thousand years later, but I will check it out.

Hi, Tonyw,

The Barabas I have heard of is in the New Testament, Absalom turns up in the book of Samuel, so it might still be an o.

Thanks anyway, Neil.

Having done more Bible reading than is my norm, and not found this answer, I am wondering if this might be an anagram of Absalom. Any thoughts on an evil person with a name like Bolsaman, or some such? The only person actually killed by Absalom was Amnon, as far as I can see.

Pipesmoker - I've got hooked on this too. Don't know if this helps, but Amnon's cousin (who aided his crime) was called JONADAB which fits the letters you've given. Don't know what became of him, though. (Courtesy of Wikipedia)

Hi, Tony.

If you have the paper, I think 15 across might be loosely, giving the o for second letter. My wife says Absalom also shows face in Chronicles, but there must be an easier way of finding the answer.
