Select four of the 3-letter solutions and arrange them into a 4-letter word that can be written symbolically in the central square (this is one blank square in the middle of the grid)

The 3-letter word answers are:
EWE - PEA - CUE - AYE - DEE

I don't understand this. Can anyone help?

Many thanks

actually,would Aye be i?
i thought of Quad because it is: 'a rectangular area surrounded on all sides'(by buildings).

might be in completely the wrong area.wrong tree.

Hi Trevor, thanks so much for your in-put. It has nudged me into thinking that perhaps it is Cue =Q,
Ewe = U, Aye = I and Dee = D

So QUID = £ (so giving the symbol for the empty square)

Thank you.
Best wises

You omitted BEE (9d) from your list of 3 letter words.
