As far as I can make out. I've been over the other clues and can't see that they are wrong but I can't be adamant. the solution will be tomorrow's Express so that will put me "out of my misery". Thanks for your reply.

If there is a leading letter not shown it could be DEMARCATED:

DATED (old-fashioned) around E(uropean)and MARC

Is there more to the clue, and what is the enumeration (number of letters)?

I'm pretty sure that must be it. There is a space before the E and I thought I had shown that! It all seems to fir in and your disentangling of the clue is more than possible. thansk you very much!
