35a is DISARRAY. DIY is housework and arras is a hanging of some kind.
8d - the best is "tha cats pyjamas" and cats spend the night on the tiles I believe.

How about:
extremely unpleasing= UG
shape= LINES
showing principally (i.e. 1st letter)= S
Lines plural looks a bit iffy but otherwise.

Hi terry
I kinda thought along the same -ahem - lines.
but is a line a shape?
or shape showing principally, to give ss
none of which are wholly convincing to me.

Hello Trevor,

Chambers Word Wizard gives among the definitions of LINE. 9. (often lines) an outline or shape-a car of stylish lines. It's a new one on me but clearly shape and lines are interchangeable in this example.
