puzzler

Despite reading all the threads on here and Answerbank I am still unsure of what needs to be highlighted in this grid. "Solvers must shade the pair (presumably one of the pairs of unclued) symbolising the occasion".
How do any of these pairs symbolise the occasion apart from a pair of clues beginning with "M"??
(Occasion is Puzzle 2000)
The unclued pairs are Ascot & Ripon, Mass & Motorway, Money & Spud and Jac & Keen.
Grateful for any help!

Puzzler, yes I think it's been agreed that the two entries starting with M are the correct ones to highlight.

I may (and probably am) thick, but the Arabian feller has me at a loss.

I have only the third letter to place, but nothing Intry seems to produce a word that exists, or one that fits the clue. Any hints, please?
